Mother of Africa
Linocut
The song “Mother of Africa” by Dave Matthews and Vusi Mahlasela, inspired me to create a linoleum block print of a mother and baby elephant to communicate how they are seen; majestic, affectionate, intelligent, compassionate, social and protective. Print size 11″ x 11″, paper size 14″ x 14″. Printed in 2023.
This image was illustrated, transferred to linolium block, then carved out of linoleum and printed with an oil-based ink onto lightweight natural lokta paper. Lokta paper is a strong, delicate handmade paper from Nepal. It is made of the inner bark of the daphne bush found in the Himalayas and neighboring mountain ranges. Lokta paper a sustainable resource. Due to the process of printing linoleum blocks, each piece may contain minor variation. This adds to the charm of relief printing – each piece is unique.
