Mother of Africa
Linocut
In this linocut, titled Mother of Africa, I wanted to capture the quiet power and protective love of an elephant matriarch. Inspired by the giants of the African savanna, this piece focuses on the physical and emotional safety a mother provides for her baby.
By showing the baby tucked close to its mother’s side, the design celebrates the deep, generational bonds that hold these families together. It is a tribute to the strength, wisdom, and nurturing spirit that defines the heart of Africa.
This image was illustrated, transferred to linolium block, then carved out of linoleum and printed with black ink onto lightweight natural lokta paper. Lokta paper is a strong, delicate handmade paper from Nepal and is a sustainable resource. Due to the process of printing linoleum blocks, each piece may contain minor variation. This adds to the charm of relief printing – each piece is unique.

Printing a linocut print using an etching press
A few ways prints can be made are by hand using a baren, a hand lever press, or an etching press.
